Addressing the Eyeworm Threat in Bobwhite Quail – Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch and Park Cities Quail

Addressing the Eyeworm Threat in Bobwhite Quail

Research conducted by the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, the Wildlife Toxicology Laboratory at Texas Tech University, and Texas A&M University – Kingsville since 2011 revealed high levels of infection in Texas bobwhites by an eyeworm (Oxyspirura petrowii).. In this video, Dr. Ron Kendall describes the life cycle of this parasite, why high infection rates can be problematic to quail, and the search for a medicated feed to reduce parasite infections in bobwhites.Funding for this research was provided by RPQRF, Park Cities Quail, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service’s Reversing the Decline of Quail Initiative. For more information about this and other projects see the RPQRF’s website at quailresearch.org.
